Melbourne Position Summary The dairy manufacturing industry contributes significantly to the Australian economy through strong exports and regional employment but is facing severe economic and environmental pressures that constrain future growth.
The Dairy Innovation Hub Is a new Initiative that will address these challenges and Is Jointly funded by the Australian Research Council, Dairy Innovation Australia Limited (DIAL), the University of Melbourne and the university of Queensland. The hub will combine the expertise f three academic and industrial research teams to develop breakthrough technical cutting edge science and emerging technologies to develop new cost-effective separation and concentration processes and innovative low cost dairy products that are nutritional and have a longer shelf-life for domestic and export markets.
The appointee for the position advertised here will be based at the University of Melbourne and will specifically consider novel membrane technologies as an approach to process innovation. This will include a scoping study of capacitive denomination as a novel technique for recovery of both salt and charged proteins from airy solutions and the development of a novel membrane distillation and crystallization process for salt recovery. Advanced infiltration technology will be studied as a new approach for removal of lactic acid from acid whey.
Success here will not only help to reduce the cost of waste disposal but also reduce environmental impact and provide new opportunities for water recycling. The appointee will be expected to travel to dairy factories operated by the member companies of DIAL in rural Victoria and NEWS and to undertake work in pilot plants both at these factories ND on the DIAL premises in Worried. The appointee is expected to undertake original research and participate actively in the research activities of both the Dairy Innovation Hub and the Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering within the University of Melbourne.
