Autopilot systems are an integral part of vehicle management systems, and are used to control and monitor vehicles in the absence of a human operator. Autopilot systems are used in aviation, missiles (unmanned), spacecraft, and shipping. They consist of three major components: a programmer or mode selector, a computer system, and an actuator. The mode selector allows a pilot to program the autopilot system and interact with avionic systems such as GAPS and the electronics used to monomaniac or navigate multiple systems.
