Discoveries are a complex, multi-dimensional process which enable individuals to develop new understandings and perceptions of the world and themselves. The Impact of these discoveries however, can vary according to an Individual’s historical, personal, cultural and social values and context. In Shakespearean play The Tempest we see both Miranda and Prosper develop as a result of their Individual discoveries about humanity. Similarly in Sylvia Plash’s poem Daddy the narrator encounters personal discoveries which ultimately lead to her freedom.
Sudden and unexpected discoveries can be confronting and transformation and are an Integral part of an individual’s development and maturation. The protagonist of Miranda in Shakespearean ploy The Tempest clearly encompasses this integral discovery which ultimately sees her develop her individuality and treated. In the beginning, Miranda is a naive, pure young woman who is isolates on the enchanted island, separated from society. Her sudden and unexpected discovery of the king’s son Ferdinand leads her to find love.
Ferdinand and Marinara’s whirlwind romance is typical of Pastoral Romance, Their strong affection Is what ultimately causes Miranda to rebel glands her father. This rebellion is the first step in the discovery of herself and her individuality. “O father, I have broke your Hess to say so”. Marinara’s pathetic Interjection showcases a mixture between her tradition to follow her father’s order and her desire to be free and control her own life. Marinara’s guilt is evident yet her affection towards “this thing divine” Ferdinand, Is strong enough to uncover her Individuality
Moreover, Marinara’s sudden and unexpected discovery of new people who were banished to the island leads her to new perceptions of the world around her. She is kept pure and Innocent by her Isolation on the Island, and has only ever Interacted with her father and the native Clinical. When she discovers new people she is excited and surprised, exclaiming “0 brave new world”. The personifications of the world demonstrates her renewed perception of its vastness and complexity.
Overall, Marinara’s confronting sudden end unexpected discoveries of Ferdinand end the there men banished on the island are what ultimately lead her to rebel against her father and develop her individuality. Similarly, discoveries can emerge as a result of careful and deliberate planning_ Prosper uses his magic to manipulate and control the actions of other character to gain control. In the beginning, we see Prosper as an angry man whose Inner tempest Is mirrored by the events on stage.
In an etc of vengeance against his brother Antonio tort usurping him, Prosper creates a wild Tempest, putting Antonio and the rest of the crew in danger, Displacement and diversity are common catalysts form transformation discoveries thus banishing his enemies will force them to be resentful. However, Prosper subsequently creates an environment where he undergoes his own unexpected end transformation discovery. Riel’s allusion to the Pathos through the use to emotive language and high modality language forces Prosper to reconsider his actions and lead him to discover forgiveness and redemption.

The use of childish Jargon in “gobbledygook’ shows that she is still young at heart and considers her dad the closest thing to “a bag full of God”. However, after a revelation, she got married to a man who reminded her of her father. Unfortunately, this is what catalysts her discovery about her hate for her father. “l have always hated you” she exclaims after releasing how much control her had in her life. “l used to pray to recover you” The past tense is an indication of her renewed perception of her father.
She resolves to metaphorically killing both men. If Vive killed one man, Vive killed two”. This line is followed by a double hyphen to allow the reader time to unscramble the paradox. By killing her husband she is able to rid herself of the memories of her father’s authoritarian figure, thus metaphorically killing both me and discovering freedom. Evidently her discovery has been confronting as she had to kill two men close to her heart yet it resolved in new perceptions of herself and was fresh and intensely meaningful.
In conclusion, it is clear that discoveries can affect people in different way depending on context and values. In The Tempest, Miranda was able to discover freedom and individuality through rebellion. Prosper was able to discover his own ability to forgive through giving up what he loved – his magic. And lastly, the speaker in Sylvia Plash’s Daddy was able to discover truth and freedom through confronting yet intensely meaningful discoveries. Despite the variety of different effects of discovery on different people, all characters exhibited a similar transformation Journey that ultimately lead to their discoveries.
