The analysis of the evidence illustrates a negative relationship between development and social cost which is demonstrated in two supporting reasons: adverse effects of development on the way people use their ands and a loss of traditional culture which has happened because of developmental change. This Information shows that the human cost of development is not reasonable. Therefore, the argument presented is that society usually endures excessively high costs for progress and development.
For many centuries, development has been occurring gradually throughout societies. These improvements have had positive and negative effects on societies. Development is a process of change that happens over a period of time and takes a society towards modernization. For every change, people need to pay some social sots which are either acceptable or unacceptable. This essay will argue that society usually needs to pay excessively high costs for progress and development.
This is because firstly, development has caused many deleterious changes in the way people use their lands; secondly, it can be seen that a loss of traditional culture has occurred because of developmental changes. The way people utilize their lands has altered over the last century because of continual economic expansion. These changes have impacted on both people’s ways of living and their environments. Firstly, changes in rural land use have incurred social cost by causing some people to become wealthy and powerful while others have become needy and powerless.
According to Risking, (2009, p. 39) approximately 66 million Chinese peasants have undergone land seizures by local governments who were on the side of private land ownership rights; they have taken over farmers’ lands at cheap prices to prepare it for either Industrialization or an increase in the land costs. The peasants have not been able to stand up to the authorities because of their poverty and powerlessness. This evidence shows that poor people in China have not had access to the law to protect their properties and life styles.
Obviously, the local governments and their members get more power and wealth by taking over and owning these lands. Secondly, economic development and changes In land use always have effects on environments and often take them towards environmental devastation. Your & Sales, (2007 cited in Balkan 2011, p. 2) said that in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus rapid construction activity increased environmental pollution, imaged natural and historical sites, and extended uncontrolled urban development. Also, according to Babied, (2010 cited In Balkan 2011, p. ) demolition of vegetation, dust pollution, and the use of materials which are harmful to human 1 OFF suffer from excessive construction development in different parts of the world and the outcome of these events is environmental devastation. In conclusion, it can be seen that adverse effects of development on changes in rural land use which have caused environmental devastation have also prevented many people from achieving heir rights. The irretrievable loss of traditional culture has resulted from developmental changes.
These alters have effects on the way of occupations and interactions of people which can be harmful to the society and its members. Firstly, traditional customs of local people have been affected by tourism and their lifestyle has changed throughout the years. According to Kabob et al, (2008, up. 45-46) half of local residents (Moss people) who live in Lug Lake in China have not been willing to keep traditional dress and diet in their everyday life and there has been a creasing trend in families with traditional Ixia marriage, from 78. 6% in the asses to 54. % in 1999; all of which are undergoing alterations through interactions with tourists and are more obvious in younger people and in people with a higher level of education. Clearly, tourism has affected normal life of the Moss people and the number of people who like to follow their traditions has been decreasing every day. Secondly, the developmental projects have had effects on the socio-psychological and cultural environment of the displaced leading to an unreasonable social cost for hose people who have been removed from their place. Dash, (2009, up. 50-157) stated that developmental projects such as larger river valley have caused stoutest and submergence of land by the Cards Soars Project which is approximated to be 7,112; 9,599, and 20,822 hectares of land in Gujarat, Maharajahs, and Madhya Pradesh respectively and the ‘liberalized’ rehabilitation policy of the Gujarat government has not paid adequate attention to displacement within its framework. In addition, the stoutest in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh used to grow similar types f crops such as bulrush millet, maize and red gram, while at the new sites they were found to be cultivating merely wheat.
Therefore, people have suffered from progressing projects and need to pay unacceptable level of social cost such as displacing and should get use to new situation. To conclude, negative effects of development on loss of traditional culture have occasioned many people loss of their traditional behavior and undergoing changes due to communicating with tourist, and also some developmental projects have caused many people to suffer by moving room their homeland. In conclusion, continual economic expansion over the last century has caused many changes in the way that people utilize their lands.
