SWOT analysis is credited to Albert Humphrey who led a research project at Stanford University in the asses and asses. The SWOT Analysis framework is a very important and useful tool to use in marketing Management and other business applications. As a basic tool its mastery is a fundamental requirement for the marketer, entrepreneur or business person. A clear understanding of SWOT is required for business majors. As you can see from this diagram the SWOT analysis is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats.

First, Strengths are characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others.

Seconds, Weaknesses are characteristics that place the team at a disadvantage relative to others.

Thirds, Opportunities are elements that the project could exploit to its advantage.

Forth, Threats are elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project. What makes SWOT particularly powerful is that, with a little thought, it can help you uncover opportunities that you are well placed to exploit.

And by understanding the weaknesses of your business, you can manage and eliminate threats that would otherwise catch you unawares. More than this, by looking at yourself and your competitors using the SWOT framework, you can start to craft a strategy that helps you distinguish yourself from your competitors, so that you can moment successfully in your market. I quoted the facts from several reports, SWOT analysis is very helpful for business person or individual who want to make new objective.

Because they needs to notice the situation before setting the goal. My understanding is that after setting the SWOT analysis, you can notice the situation and plan details to realize the objective. Let’s see the example for SWOT analysis. This is Mac Dona’s. There are several factors of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and treats.

First, Strengths.

Ranks are very high on the Fortune Magazine’s most admired list.

Global operations all over the world.

Cultural diversity in the foods.

Excellent location.

Use of top quality products.

Second. Weaknesses.

High training costs due to high turnover.

Minimal concentration fried foods not on healthier option for their customers.

Third, opportunities.

Opening more Joint ventures.

Being more responsive to healthier options.

Expansions of business into newly developed parts of the world.

Open products up to allergen free option such as peanut free.

Forth, treats.

Lawsuits for offering unhealthy foods.

The vast amount of fast food restaurants that are open as competition.

Focus on healthier dieting by consumers.

Down turn in economy affecting the ability to eat that much.

In this table, you can guess what the Mac Dona’s need to do and could to do.

For example, if Mac Dona’s want to win the market again and hold fast to first position in fast food industry, they need to make non-allergen menu, and make an image like healthy and fast food. To sum up, SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face.
