Founded in 1999 by co-owners James and Nally Park, the Nally & Millie label combines James’ management expertise with Nally’s talent for unique, trendy adornments.  With designs strong in novelty and embellishment driven tops for women’s contemporary wear, Nally & Millie bridges the gap between true Contemporary and Missy. James Park, President/Owner of M.X.F. Designs Inc. (dba) Nally & Millie

Originally from South Korea, James immigrated to the United States at age 13 and discovered his passion for business and technology at UC Santa Barbara where he received his B.S. in Engineering.  After excelling in retail sales and management in the personal computer industry throughout the mid-to-late 80’s, James became the co-owner of a consulting and software developing company that focused on production tracking and management.  With a strong determination to understand and utilize all aspects of the business world, James also trained in an import/export company in production development and marketing.

In May 1994, James’ dedication to excellence finally paid off.  As co-owners, James and Nally opened the wholesale and retail store, “Minha’s” in the Los Angeles Garment District.   Carrying woman’s clothing, accessories and fashion shoes, the company incorporated as M.X.F. Designs Inc. in 1999 and began making specialty items under different labels.  The undeniable popularity of these items inspired them to create the Nally & Millie label which has since grown into it’s own success. A driving force behind the smooth operation of Nally & Millie, James is responsible for all managerial duties of the business – personnel, accounting, computers, information management and supervision of customer order processing and shipping.  A dedicated businessman with great respect for his wife’s talent, James ensures that Nally’s unique designs always meet their destination and delivery deadline.

Nally Park, Designer/Owner, M.X.F. Designs, Inc. (dba) Nally & Mille

An immigrant from South Korea at age 11, Nally learned the art of self-reliance early.  She began working in retail, sales management and merchandising while still in high school, developing an eye for fashion and design over the years at companies like Judy’s, Contempo, Bullock’s Wilshire and Ms. Amber’s in Hollywood.  Determined to get a well-rounded on-the-job education in business and design, she also worked for an independent high-retail Boutique covering every area including buying.  Immersing herself in this industry infused her with a keen sense for fashion trends, current ones as well as the creation of future hits.

In May 1994, Nally’s fluency in fashion retail combined with James’ management expertise when they opened and co-owned the store “Minha’s” in the Los Angeles Garment District.  Successfully selling women’s clothing, accessories and fashion shoes (retail and wholesale) led Nally and James to incorporate as M.X.F. Designs Inc. in 1999.  It was at this time that Nally’s creativity and heightened awareness of upcoming popular fashion exploded.  She began making specialty items under different labels that sold as quickly as she could make them.  From this success, Nally & Millie was born.

Through diligence, hard-work and hands-on involvement, Nally designs and supervises all phases of production at Nally & Mille.  Integrating novelty embellishments on women’s tops is her specialty, but she never loses sight of practicality.  She ensures her clothing is not only unique and creative, but also wearable and washable, creating trends that will last.  Her success is evident, having been nominated for the Atlanta Diva Award and twice nominated, once awarded for the WWD Dallas Fashion Award in the Junior Contemporary category.

Marketing Material vs. Press Releases

This past Friday one of my consistent clients came to me with a new copywriting project.  She wanted me to write a press release with a hard sell of the benefits of her particular service. She made a common mistake: she assumed that a press release would be written and used the same way as marketing material.  This is simply not the case, and yet plenty of people confuse press releases with marketing material.  My copywriter friends tell me they run into the same problem with their clients. So let me take a moment to explain the difference.

Marketing material is a huge category that encompasses any print or electronic media that sells your product or service, including brochures, websites, radio and TV ads, banners, advertisements, flyers, postcards, sell sheets, product descriptions, direct sales letters and so on.  As a copywriter, when I create your marketing material, I’m focusing on the features and benefits of your product.  The client and I agree on a hard sell or a soft sell and make sure that all the unique selling positions are clearly stated using engaging copy that makes them want to buy.  The goal of any marketing material is to show the consumer that they need this product or service and they need it now.

But press releases are a whole different beast.  Also referred to as “news” releases, they are just that: announcements of news.  These materials do not push the features and benefits of a product or service, though they may certainly explain what the service is or what the product does.  But there should be no “sell” to a press release.  Editors are looking for a news story, so copywriters need to find a news angle for their clients.  You might be launching a new business.  You might have a new product line or hired a new Director Of Marketing.  Maybe you’ve signed on a celebrity spokesperson or have a special limited offer available.  Perhaps you’re responding to a current event with your service (a pizza place brings free pizza to striking union workers).  The point is, a press release must be newsworthy or, quite frankly, an editor will throw it in the “round file” (also known as the wastebasket).

So when you hire a copywriter to write your press release, remember that the goal is to create news about your product or service that peaks the readers curiosity.  Then you can hit them with the hard sell when they visit your website or store.

Giving Your Copy A Face Lift

It’s unavoidable.  Eventually your marketing copy will get old, showing signs of aging that are as frightening as that first gray hair or laugh line.  It’ll wrinkle and sag where it used to be fresh and crisp; it will become outdated, no longer reflecting the true essence of your business. While I don’t necessarily condone a massive cosmetic overhaul of the human body, I do highly recommend a face lift for any copy that is over five years old.  Here’s why:

You’ve changed. Your business evolves as it grows older.  Especially if you just launched five years ago, your business probably incorporates other services, products and/or people that it didn’t when you first started.  Your business philosophy also matures and expands as you find your footing in your industry.  Keeping your copy fresh allows you to ensure your brand is clear and secure.

The industry changes. No matter what industry you’re in, the probability that it has modified in some way is high. Your business needs to keep up with what goes on in your industry as a whole.  Is there a new service you need to provide?  Is there a product that no one else is offering, even though there’s a clear need for it?  Are there new best practices that you should be following?  Even though the industry may inform how you handle your business, that doesn’t mean you have to compromise your brand.  A professional copywriter will help reinvigorate your copy in step with the industry without losing the pieces that make you stand out.

Everybody else changes. How we communicate is rapidly evolving, more so than it ever has before.  Your customers and clients are taking in new information every minute and making decisions within 30 seconds of reading content. Educating yourself on online trends – especially website copy, blogs and social networking – and then adhering to them keeps you on top of the wave rather than under it.

Change is good. Though plenty of folks are scared of change – whether it’s on their face or within their business – change means growth.  Growth means wisdom. And wisdom means more informed choices and solutions for a healthy, successful business.  So find a copywriter to give your copy the facelift it deserves.  I promise it won’t hurt
