Anyone can be affected by mental health problems and often they occur because of a lack of care for our physical, emotional and intellectual needs. Physically, it is important to maintain a healthy diet, take regular exercise and practice good sleep hygiene. Emotionally, human beings need to feel a connection with other people. Having an active social life, close friends, being involved In the community as well as engaging with a personal sense of spirituality, all these things contribute to our emotional well-being. Intellectually, we must feel Halloween.
This can be in an academic capacity or through exercising skills, such as playing an instrument, being creative or doing the crossword puzzle. Increasing our self-reflection and awareness of our emotions and behavior also contributes to our mental wellness. This stems from our hunter- gatherer days, when for protection, we needed to be a part of the group and abandonment posed a serious threat to our survival. I can relate this to my current circumstances and our class discussions on mental health has re-iterated the importance of social connection. The Bio-psyche-social-spiritual model demonstrates that these aspects are Interconnected and these needs must be managed continuously to allow the treatment to have an ongoing positive effects for clients. From a personal perspective, considering how each aspect of the model intertwines with one another was insightful. If I apply the model to my own mental wellness, I can see how important it is to pay attention to factors such as stress and lifestyle. Stress at home, coupled with a lack of social interaction in my life had definitely been a test of my ‘inner’ strength during this past year. Another crucial factor for me is the amount of sleep that I have. I have discovered that even one night f disturbed sleep drastically reduces my ability to cope with stress.
Another key thing that I have identified is that if life at home is stressful it can have serious implications on other areas of life. Not having a quiet, safe and relaxing space free of worries or conflict has a detrimental impact on a individuals ability to cope. A person’s environment is perhaps the first thing that should be approached or explored when discussing clients issues. If large amounts of stress are ascertained then providing support networks should help to alleviate some of the discomfort.
