Introduction Background In recent years Drexel University has been taking leaps and bounds to assert themselves as one of Americas top universities. In 2011 and 2012 Drexel was appeared in US News and World Reports top five up and coming universities, and recently has been taking on massive construction projects to accommodate the needs of their ever growing student population. As the student population continues to Increase Drexel University must provide these students with a greater area of study space around campus.

In order for Drexel University to keep on their path to coming on of Americas top university Drexel must Increase their library faceless as a place for students to study, grow, and prosper in their academic lives. The library is socialize, and stay connected with their fellow colleagues. Dresser’s 2013 total enrollment was 18,534 undergraduate and graduate students yet the university only provides one three story library for students to study at making it hard to find seating and deterring many students from studying at the W.

W Haggier Library. Problem One of the biggest problems I see at Drexel is the disconnect that students feel with en and other, the creation of a new and improved student library could help to reconnect the student body under as one unified group. The library is traditionally the core of a university where students can get together to collaborate, socialize, and stay connected with their fellow colleagues. Students due to its lack of space and outdated appearance currently neutralized the W. W Haggier library.

With a student population of over 20,000 Drexel University must provide study space to accommodate all their students and the WWW Haggier Library is simply not cutting to. Purpose I write this report to show you the benefits’ to both students and the university that constructing a second library could bring. Our goal is to display to you that for Drexel University to assert themselves as one of Americas top universities it is crucial that they increase the library facilities available for students.

Objective The objective of our report is to prove to you that not only the Drexel student population but also the University as a whole could benefit from the construction a new and improved university library. Body Drexel University is a private college that currently has about 20,000 undergraduate ND post graduate students enrolled in its many colleges. Founded in 1891, Drexel has a long history, and has Just recently begun to see a more rapid expansion in enrollment and campus size.

The main allure at Drexel has always been the cooperative education program, which has attracted a variety of business and engineering students from all over the world. The cooperative education program at Drexel has created a unique environment that encourages professionalism and work experience starting from freshman year. Drexel has ambitions plans to completely renovate its campus into a world-class research and education institution. These plans have included new dormitories, research facilities, classroom facilities, and retail space.

The 2012-2017 master plan is an ambitious and exciting project, and is a massive step in achieving Dresser’s long-term goals. Yet, in all the massive renovations and construction projects Drexel has planned, there has been little consideration over the already existing W. W. Haggier Library on 33rd Street and Market Street. The current master plan includes some renovations that will undoubtedly improve the overall use of the library, yet compared to the other ambitious projects Drexel has landed, the library renovations are not as impressive. Currently, the W. W. Haggier Library is an anchor on what Drexel University intends its image to be.

Built in 1983, the library has not changed at all and is an eyesore to current students and prospecting students. The library should be considered one of the most important buildings on campus, as it is where students spend most of their college career. As a pre-Junior at Drexel, I have dread going to the library but the only reason why I come solitude and study, it should also be a place where students can socialize, find useful lolls to collaborate, and to stay connected to their university. The Haggier Library only provides solitude and study, and barely touches on the other important aspects previously mentioned.

The library must undergo complete reconstruction or a major renovation to keep up with Dresser’s ambitions. In any case, we have put together a proposal of ideas that the university should take in to consideration for a new library. We should look to other university libraries in world-class campuses for examples, and learn from their strong points and weak points. As mentioned before, Drexel is to like every other university, and therefore our library should not be like every other library, not even the library of an Ivy League school.

With our strong focus on real-world experience, our library should represent and foster the ideas of self- sufficiency and ambitiousness. Student organizations should have the freedom to rent conference rooms without having to seek approval from Drexel. Student-run establishments such as coffee stands should replace the current Taco Bell in the library cafe. Laptops should be easier to rent without having to pay late fees for being less than five minutes late in returning a laptop. These are Just a few issues that need to be addressed in the overall total renovation of the Haggier Library.

Not only will this project be appealing to current students, it will also revamp Dresser’s overall image to other students and incoming students. As mentioned before, Drexel should focus on building a library that fosters the ideals of self-sufficiency and ambitiousness. With a business school growing in reputation and size, the library should also be a welcoming center to entrepreneurs. The library should be a center for student-run venues that completely rely on the innovation and responsibility of our student body, as to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit.

A venue that we recommend is a completely student-run and student-managed coffee cart called the Drexel Bean. The Drexel Bean’s purpose would not be to completely turn a profit, but to teach students the real-life fundamentals of running a business. The Drexel Bean would consist of multiple coffee carts placed throughout the library and campus, each cart being run by a group of Drexel students. Most major universities currently have student-run coffee shops that have proven to be successful and popular amongst student bodies, but creating a competition between multiple student-run ND student-managed coffee shops would be revolutionary.

A student-run coffee shop is Just one example of the many student development programs the library could promote. Another significant function of a library is to promote school spirit. A library is a vital place for students to connect and collaborate, and the environment of a workspace is a key factor in cultivating that. The current Haggier Library does the opposite of this. Our current library presents itself as an old forgotten building full of old wooden tables and chairs; a completely different image than Drexel intends. The

Haggier Library should welcome student social life as a way to unify the student population to create a stronger sense of school spirit. This will lead to a more loyal student body; something that could help with Dresser’s current retention rate. Dresser’s library should also become a more prominent place of knowledge. Our current databases and book collections are small compared to other nearby computers, book collections, and databases should be installed. Also, there should be more functioning printers on each floor, instead of two printers that sometimes work.

The purpose of this arrangement is that students find more convenience in implementing projects and other school-related tasks. If there are different brands of computers, it will be so hard to meet all students’ needs. Modern technology provides convenience to academic researches. All computers should install database software for students’ convenience to do academic researches. Once they open the software and type down what they want to know, all the books in the library will pop up. Not only computer databases should be installed, but also the traditional way to do academic researches is also important.

More books should be placed on each lour because there is more space for them. Different subjects in alphabetic orders should arrange the books. The librarians must be knowledgeable in the library management process. As Elbow School of Business gets more and more students every year, there should be a special place for economics and business related subjects. Economic and business books should be placed together. It is for the convenience of business students because business students are the largest student body on campus. All the tutoring services should be placed in the new library, such as math tutoring center and writing center.

This arrangement is considered convenient for students because they can Just walk around in the library rather easily. Not only math and English centers should be placed, but all other subjects’ tutoring services could be installed. There should be enough rooms for these services in the new library. In the end, the library should be the center of student social and academic life. The library should not Just encourage those who seek only solitude, but should encourage every student to come as much as possible. Students can only benefit from being in a library, as they are being surrounded by new ideas constantly.

Drexel University has a very bright future ahead, and a new library is a key step in continuing forward. Beanlike Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University Library, New Haven Connecticut Duke University Library Emory University Library Conclusion The information in this report should provide you with a first hand account of a major problem facing Drexel University and the solution to this problem is quite simply, constructing a improved and larger university library to the university’s facilities would open many doors for Drexel university as a whole.

The results of a elaborations and the creation of a more connected overall student body. One of the highlights of a Drexel education is the real world experience that you receive through the coop experience and the person-to-person professional experience that students gain from that. With the construction of a new University library students could gain more student-to-student contact providing them with the people skills they needs outside of college.

Our finding indicate that when it comes to universities a large central library usually acts as the glue that holds together a large student body like Drexel. As Drexel continues to establish themselves as one of Americas top universities construction of a new and improved central library is an essential step to making this vision a reality. Recommendations Based on our findings we recommend for the next step in this process a university wide survey be distributed to get a better idea of the problem and possible solutions to address this problem.
